About
My name is Alex Hochman and I am The Urban Stomach. I hope that you regularly check my little food corner of the web for mini-reviews on restaurants, food carts, and really anything that is edible. While I’ll focus on San Francisco, my hometown, I also look forward to taking Urban Stomach on the road occasionally. As much as I love giving people a good restaurant recommendation, I love getting one even more. The excitement of trying a place for the first time is, for me, the equivalent of what it used to feel like going on a first date. I treasure the people in my life who I go to for food advice and love the fact that there is so much to learn, try, taste, touch and savor. The beauty of the Bay Area is that I can go on giving and getting great food tips seemingly forever. Please feel free to contact me with any good food tips!

Lots of luck with this great blog……

Thanks Ilysa and Jason!
This Rocks Alex! Please make sure to include our favorite Chinese haunts. Since we can’t be in SF, we can at least live vicariously through your culinary palette!
I have a reader in Texas! Thanks Susan. Please forward to any friends and family in the bay area. Best to the family.
Alex, all the best!!! Loved the first two stories. I already have a hankering for curry.
Great site Alex. In your travels, check out Hudson’s Hamburgers – 3rd generation family business in Couer d’Alene. Only burgers. NO KETCHUP allowed. The Tastee Diner in Bethesda. And Joe’s Shanghai in Soho.
Alex –
I found this through Facebook – congrats!!! Whenever I think of SF and places to eat I always think of you. I will never forget the days of sitting next to you at work with a line of people asking you where to go for great food. The donut stories were always my favorite!! You have always known the best places for anything. Didn’t BC ask you to find something for him once. You scoured NY and then he changed his mind???

Hi Alex,
Great talking to you at the SFFS event….
The pupuseria is called “Los Planes de Renderos Pupuseria” 12 Persia @ Mission.
Great blog!

We tried to go to Ben’s Chili Bowl but it was way to crowded but the place on the corner where Ben’s is is very good but since there is only one chef. the wait is really long.
I’m looking forward to following your blog. I am also an SF resident that just started a blog on seasonal food…with a little kick!! We live in the BEST city for eating, cooking, eating, cooking. I think your blog will truly be a win for me b/c you must live in the area hitting all of the Nob Hill go-tos. I had not tried Cordon Bleu and now I’m all over it! Anyways, great reading and good luck to ya!

Nice work, Alex – and U Lee in the banner is where I took my wife on our first date ever… ah, potstickers and cable cars.
Great fun reading these entries – keep at it, and thanks for the depth and, er, girth of your reporting!
Hey Alex -
I’m married to Brian Satovsky’s sister Nikki and we live here in SF. Brian just sent me a link to your blog. Good stuff! Enjoyed reading everything.
I do have to say that I found Tony’s quite good but massively over rated. Pizzetta, Delfina, and even the thin pizza at Little Star are all better. Also, I’ve never heard anyone slam Buddy’s. Are you kidding? Admittedly it’s in its own category, but it has to be considered among the most tasty pie around. Sort of like Goden Boy but better. And their salads are ridiculous!
Best,
Stone
Alex!
I’m joining Twitter soley to follow food carts in San Francisco, thanks for the Magic Curry Kart review!
On the recommendation front, have you been to Sushi Bistro? The original location is on Balboa between 5th Ave and 6th Ave with a second location on York St., near SF General.
It’s aboslutely fantastic. If you’re interested in going, let me know and I will introduce you to our favorite off-the-menu items!!
Jamie
Go Alex! Great tips.
